Catseye: Plot 1
This frame displays the selected X-Y plot. The frame contains:
- X-Y plot
- X, Y range inputs
- Log scaling options
- Replot button
The plot selected from the previous frame is displayed here. There is
actually no real science content to this plot. We see here the effect
of Abell's quantization of galaxy populations into distinct "richness"
bins. When the authors of this catalog calculated the mean apparent
population (Pop) of
each cluster, they simply use the mean galaxy population for each
richness group and then scaled it by its distance, which was simply
derived by the magnitude of the 10th brightest galaxy in each cluster
(Mag10). Since we're plotting Mag10 vs. Pop,
we are plotting the same parameter scaled by different constants, which
can be seen as the different curves in the plot.
To illustrate range and axis modification, we chose to limit the X range
from 12-15 magnitude, and use a log scale for the Y axis, to compress
the dynamic range a bit.
TO GO ON: Press Rescale Plot to see the new plot.
