INTRODUCTION
Funding permitting, the ADC staff will join with others from the Astrophysics
Data Facility at an exhibit booth at the January meeting of the AAS in
Toronto. We will be demonstrating our Internet services and we are planning
to have a new CD-ROM for distribution to attendees of the meeting. (See my
article below for more information on the new CD-ROM.) Please stop by the ADF
booth to see our demos or to discuss your thoughts on how we can improve our
services.
Our sister organization, the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), is
also interested in your thoughts on how to improve its services. The Head of
the NSSDC has a short article in this issue on how you can participate in a new
survey they are taking.
There's a new NASA poster that you will want to have for your office or
classroom. ADF and SSDOO staffers have put together a poster that shows the
plane of the Milky Way in seven portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
It's great for comparing large-scale Galactic features in different spectral
regimes. It was designed as an educational tool for advanced high school and
beginning college students, but professionals can find it useful themselves.
See Dave Leisawitz's article for more information.
OK, you've found a catalog or journal table you want to look at - and it isn't
terribly large. Wish you could just have your Netscape or other Web browser
just show you the data? What? You didn't know that you CAN do that already?
Read on for instructions on how to view decompressed ADC files via the Web
with minimal hassle.
See you in Toronto in January? (Brrr.)

New NSSDC User Survey
Joseph H. King (National Space Science Data Center)
The National Space Science Data Center at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
has initiated a new survey of present and potential users of its data and
services. The survey aims to gauge user satisfaction and to gather
suggestions for changes in its services and interfaces that would make NSSDC
more effective and useful to its users. As many users of the ADC have also
used, or may potentially use NSSDC's services, we invite you to give us your
opinions and suggestions. The survey form is on the Web at
http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nssdc/survey.html.

"Multiwavelength Milky Way" Poster Released
David Leisawitz (Astrophysics Data Facility)
The Astrophysics Data Facility has developed an educational poster entitled
the "Multiwavelength Milky Way" which depicts the Galaxy at radio, infrared,
optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths. This poster contains images of the
Galactic 21-cm and CO (J = 1 -> 0) line emission, and IRAS 12, 60, and 100
micron, COBE/DIRBE 1.25, 2.2, and 3.5 micron, Digital Sky Survey optical
wavelength, ROSAT X-ray, and CGRO/EGRET gamma ray broadband emission. All of
the data sets are publicly available. There are captions that describe the
Milky Way and what can be learned about the Galaxy from measurements made in
each segment of the electromagnetic spectrum. The poster is intended to be an
educational tool - one that will stimulate heightened awareness by laypersons
of NASA's contribution to modern astronomy.
The poster was unveiled at IAU Symposium 179 on "New Horizons from
Multi-Wavelength Sky Surveys," held at the Space Telescope Science Institute
in Baltimore, MD, during 26-30 August 1996. Approximately 450 copies of the
poster were distributed to those attending. Copies will also be distributed at
a future meeting of the AGU and at the 189th meeting of the American
Astronomical Society, which is to be held in Toronto, Ontario during 11-16
January 1997.
Drs. Seth Digel and Dave Leisawitz worked with graphic artists Sarah Geitz and
Jay Friedlander to design the poster. Professor Geitz, of Purdue University,
worked on the project during her visit to NASA/Goddard as a NASA Summer
Faculty Fellow. The participants wish to thank Dr. James Green, Chief of the
Space Science Data Operations Office, for sponsoring the project.
It is hoped that the poster will be displayed in secondary school classrooms,
public libraries, and in the corridors of university astronomy departments.
Requests for individual copies of the poster may be submitted to the NSSDC's
Coordinated Request and User Support Office.
[ Editor's note: Readers can preview this poster by viewing the
low-resolution GIF version at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/mw/poster_image.html.
The authors also have an on-line request form for single copies at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/mw/poster_req.html. E-mail requests can be sent to
request@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov. The images and descriptions are also available
as the HTML file

New ADC CD-ROM Release Planned
James E. Gass (Hughes STX)
Due to the popularity of Volume 2 of the "Selected Astronomical Catalogs"
CD-ROM, and to responses to April's questionnaire, the ADC has begun the
preparation of a new CD-ROM, "Selected Astronomical Catalogs - Volume 3".
The new disc will contain a mix of catalogs which have been updated since
Volume 1 and popular catalogs not published on either of the first two
Volumes. As with Volume 2, we intend to produce separate ASCII and FITS
Table discs. At the time of this writing, the contents of the new Volume
are still subject to change.
We are aiming to have Volume 3 ready for distribution before next January's
AAS meeting. It is possible that only the ASCII version may be ready by that
time. But our goal is to have both versions ready at the start of 1997.
We will notify our subscribers by Email when the new disc is available.
Information on the contents and availability of the new CD-ROM will also
be on the WWW at http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_other_media.html. Requests
can be sent to the NSSDC's Coordinated Request User Support Office at
request@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov. Please submit requests for Volume 3 no earlier
than December 1, 1996 or until you receive our announcement of its release,
whichever is earlier. Other queries concerning the new CD-ROM may be sent
to help@adc.astro.umd.edu.

How to View Small Data Files from Your Web Browser
James E. Gass (Hughes STX)
I've been asked to point out to our readers that there is an easy way to take
a look at the contents of the smaller data files in the ADC's archives. The
ADC's FTP site contains gzip compressed versions of the catalogs and journal
tables. If you request a file either from an FTP or WWW client, you will be
sent this compressed file, and you will need to decompress it before viewing
it. From a World Wide Web browser, you can take advantage of our FTP server's
ability to decompress the data files "on the fly" to have it automatically
displayed on your screen. This technique is NOT recommended for files larger
than 100 kilobytes - it becomes rather impractical for a number of reasons.
Here's an example of what to do:
Let's say that you have navigated to the FTP directory for Catalog 5079,
Downes and Shara's Catalog and Atlas of Cataclysmic Variables.
I.e., your web browser is pointing to
ftp://adc.astro.umd.edu/pub/adc/archives/catalogs/5/5079/ .
You would like to look at the contents of the file that is sorted by
Right Ascension, rasort.dat.gz, which is a bit over 24.5 kB (compressed)
in size. Open the URL
ftp://adc.astro.umd.edu/pub/adc/archives/catalogs/5/5079/rasort.dat
omitting the ".gz" extension. (Do this either by editing the address window,
or using the open URL option and entering the address by hand.) This tells
the FTP server that you want the gzipped file decompressed before it is sent.
That's all there is to it. If you don't have a utility to decompress gzipped
files on your system you can use the same technique from an FTP client to
have our server decompress it for you before sending it. When in the above
directory, enter the command "get rasort.dat".
If you encounter problems, you can contact us at help@adc.astro.umd.edu for
assistance.
