                               INTRODUCTION

The ADC staff welcomes a student volunteer from the U.K. this month. Aron
Rachamim joins us for a four-week long stint. He is writing an educational
document on astronomical data for distribution on our new "ADC for Students
and Educators" page.

In the last issue we told you that we were re-designing the ADC Web site.
The new design replaced the old on July 3rd. See the article in this issue
for more details - and be sure to check out the new pages!

At the last Astrophysics Data Facility Science Steering Committee meeting,
Dr. Jaylee Mead, the person most responsible for the founding of the ADC,
gave a presentation on the early history of the Astronomical Data Center.
She has kindly turned that presentation into an article for this newsletter.

As was true for the last two years, the ADC is on track to release another
CD-ROM in the series "Selected Astronomical Catalogs" by the end of this year.
This will be Volume 4 of the series. See Gail Schneider's article in this
issue for more information, including the preliminary list of contents.

New ADC Web Site Design Goes Public
                          James E. Gass (Hughes STX)

Our subscribers who have experience in creating World Wide Web sites know
that properly maintaining them can be a big job. As the capabilities of the
Web expand, the expectations of its users change. Sometimes web pages need an
aesthetic update. At other times, the information behind the pages changes,
or the shortcomings of the current web site design are found to be hindering
its effective use. When these motivations for updates reach a certain point,
it's time to revamp the site. The ADC's web site has just undergone a major
redesign. While efforts were made to make it more visually appealing, the
main goal was to further simplify navigation for the first time user. Also,
new pages were added to better serve particular groups of users.

For newcomers to the site, there is a new visitor's page featuring a web site
tour. The new design also includes pages especially for amateur astronomers
and others for students and educators. Access to the ADC's public data is
consolidated on the new "Catalog & Journal Table Collections" page
(http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_collections.html). The revised "Software
Tools for ADC Users" page presents the programs available from ADC in a table
organized by application and operating system. The new "Inside ADC" page
contains an "ADC Reference Shelf", "Behind the Scenes" information on the
workings of the ADC, information on what's "On the Drawing Board" for future
ADC products and services, and a hyperlinked chart of where ADC fits in the
NASA organizational structure.

As new services and products are developed, we'll be linking them in to this
new collection of web pages. Check our "What's New" page and future issues of
this newsletter for updates. Finally, don't be shy about using our on-line
feedback form (http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/questions_feedback.html#feedback)
to share your thoughts on our services and how to improve them. While you're
at it, tell us how you like the new design.

The Early History of the ADC
                                Jaylee Mead (AAS)

Goddard Space Flight Center's Astronomical Data Center was built on
developments made by astronomers who were forward-looking in anticipating the
future needs of the field, particularly considering the requirements of space
astronomy. As early as 1959, when I joined NASA, the agency was working with
the Naval Research Laboratory to develop a computerized approach to the
calibration of the Minitrack System for use in tracking the earliest
satellites. This involved devising a method for computerized plate reductions
using star catalog coverage of the entire sky. At that time only 14 small
star catalogs were machine-readable. Astronomers at the US Naval Observatory
and Yale Observatory were cooperating in key-punching of positional data for
250,000 additional stars from the Yale Zone and AGK2 catalogs. At Goddard we
put this data on 9-track magnetic tape and wrote the software to provide
automated plate reductions. Sixteen 12-inch tapes were required to load in
all the stellar data!

This experience in the 1960's provided a logical basis for applications needed
by upcoming space missions, such as the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory, the
Goddard Experiment Package (which failed to reach orbit), and IUE. Additional
astronomical catalogs were made machine-readable for use in these and later
missions, primarily for planning observations, preparation of finding charts,
telescope pointing requirements and later identification of field stars.

By the early 1970's astronomers in other countries were also foreseeing the
need for computerized stellar and galactic databases. The French government
was among the most farsighted when they announced in 1970 plans to establish
the Strasbourg Stellar Data Center. The Goddard ADC has had strong
cooperative ties with the French center since that time, when we exchanged
copies of all of our machine-readable catalogs, a practice which continues
today.

Many people contributed to the ADC in the early years. Among those who made
the most significant inputs through hands-on efforts, funding, advice or other
encouragement are William Cahill, Ray and Julie Duncombe, Dorrit Hoffleit,
Theresa Nagy, Wayne Warren, Carlos Jaschek, Nancy Roman, Anne Underhill, Al
Boggess, Gart Westerhout, and Jim Vette.

ADC CD-ROM, Volume 4 Planned for December Release
                      Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

The ADC has begun the preparation of a new CD-ROM, "Selected Astronomical
Catalogs - Volume 4". The new disc will contain a mix of catalogs which have
been updated since Volumes 1, 2 and 3 and popular catalogs not published on
the first three Volumes. We plan to only produce ASCII Table discs, software
will be provided to allow users to create FITS table versions if they need
 them.

We are aiming to have Volume 4 ready for distribution by the end of this
year and will notify our subscribers by Email when the new disc is available.
Please do not submit requests for Volume 4 until you receive our announcement
of its release. Queries concerning the new CD-ROM may be sent to
 adc@adc.astro.umd.edu.

Below is our preliminary list of contents, this list is still subject to
 change.

Update on the ADC's Catalog & Journal Table Holdings
                       Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

Currently, the ADC archives hold more than 2100 catalogs and tables. The
catalogs are grouped into nine categories of data and the journal tables have
been published in astronomical periodicals. Recently we have added several
additional astronomical periodicals to our collection of journal tables, such
as the South African Astronomical Observatory, Circulars.

As reported in our April issue, the holdings lists have been modified to
indicate which data sets have been superseded, and by what catalogs. Also,
we have recently added hyperlinks to catalogs contained in our Selected
Astronomical Catalogs CD-ROM collection. These links will take you directly
to our CD-ROM page containing a brief description of each CD-ROM and
additional links to contents listings and ordering information.

                          New External Category
                      Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

A new category called "external" has been added to our internet services. It
is divided into subdirectories just like the "catalogs" directory, including
astrometric, photometric, spectroscopic, etc. We have included some very
large catalogs, many of them ADC cannot archive because of resource
constraints. Each subdirectory has external catalog numbered directories
with distinctive ReadMe files, each containing brief descriptions and pointers
to the external on-line services.

This allows the external services to be included as results provided by the
CNIDR free-text search engine with the rest of the ADC catalogs. Now, one
query returns the catalog, journal table, superseded and external short
titles.

The URL is ftp://adc.astro.umd.edu/pub/adc/archives/external.

Newly Archived Catalogs and Journal Tables
                    Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

The following catalogs and journal tables are currently available from the
ADC. In addition to our major journals, we now have publications
from other journals.

We would like to thank the CDS, AAS and individual authors for making many of
the listed catalogs and journal tables available for our archival.

See http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/acq_new_updated.html#new_list for
a hypertext version of this article containing direct links to each
catalog and journal table listed.
