                             INTRODUCTION

The ADC staff is once again preparing for an exhibit booth at the Winter AAS
meeting. This year's meeting is in San Antonio, Texas. If you are planning on
being there, please stop by Booth #4, the Astrophysics Data Facility booth, and
meet some of the ADC staffers. We will be demonstrating our Internet services
and distributing our new CD-ROM collection of astronomical catalogs. There is
a $10 fee for each disc, which is waived for bona fide NASA-funded researchers.
See Gail Schneider's article below for more details on the new CD-ROMs.

If you won't be at the AAS meeting, but would like to order a CD, read Gail's
article for ordering information.

		 !!! NEW CD-ROM VOLUME NOW AVAILABLE !!!

                 Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume 2
                    Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

The ADC would like to announce the availability of the Selected Astronomical
Catalogs, Volume 2 CD-ROM. The catalogs contained on this CD-ROM cover a
variety of subjects and were selected because they are large or frequently
requested. For example, this CD-ROM contains the large Durchmusterung catalogs
that did not fit on Volume 1 as well as some other large catalogs like the
Hipparcos and Tycho catalogs. There are two versions of this CD-ROM, one
in ASCII (Volume 2, No. 1) and one in FITS (Volume 2, No. 2).

The documentation of the catalogs follows the standard adopted by the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/ADC and the Centre de Donnees
astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) in France. For each catalog a standard
documentation file called "ReadMe" was created. By using this ReadMe file as
input and software from the CDS (anafile), each catalog was checked for the
proper data format, units, allowed data ranges, and correct sorting of the
data as specified in the ReadMe. During the verification process errors that
were found were corrected in both the data and the documentation. Some catalog
data files were reformatted to enable their description in the byte-by-byte
tables in the standard ReadMe documentation. This standard format was used with
another CDS program (tofits) to convert the data, originally in flat ASCII, to
the FITS format. The body of the ReadMe file is incorporated in the
FITS primary and table extension headers.

Each disk has a simple layout with, at the highest level, separate directories
for the catalogs, software, and additional documentation. Each CD-ROM is
formatted according to the ISO 9660 standard, and the file names have been
restricted to eight characters with a three-character extension. A hyperlinked
HTML version of the CD-ROM's booklet is included on the discs. Users may find this a
handy tool for exploring the disc's contents.

Included in each CD-ROM are software tools useful for browsing
and/or extracting data from the catalogs. The same five software packages
are included on both the ASCII version (Volume 2, No. 1) and the FITS version
(Volume 2, No. 2) of this CD-ROM. BBEdit Lite and Browser are for the
Macintosh. FIND, Aurora, and the FITS Table Browser for IBM PC and compatibles
with the DOS operating system. The FITS Table Browser will also work on some
UNIX systems. They allow the user to edit large files, do catalog specific
work, or access FITS files.

Please note that both freeware and shareware are on the disks. The user is
obliged to comply with the shareware agreement outlined in the documentation
accompanying the software. This applies to the Aurora and Browser shareware.
BBEdit Lite is freeware, as explained in the documentation accompanying it.
FIND and FTB are freeware and are distributed "as-is" with no guarantee of
any kind.

Special Prefixes in the Format Tables
                       Nancy G. Roman (Hughes STX)

There are frequently symbols at the beginning of an explanation in the format
tables of the standard documentation that accompany most catalog and journal
files. These are necessary for confirming that the data agree with expectations.
However, they can also be useful to the catalog user. They have the following
meanings:

Numbers within square brackets, [ ], indicate the range of possible
values. They may be individual characters or a range of characters or
   numbers (for example, [ ?] or [A-Z, 3- 9]). For a numeric column, the
range can be between reversed square brackets. For example, ]350,650[
means that the range is 351-649. That is. the square brackets serve as
greater than and less than signs. The ends of the range are excluded.

For data that are read with a numerical format (I, F, D, or E), a
question mark, ?, indicates that the record may be blank in that column.
The symbol ?=x, where x represents one or more numbers, indicates that
the value x instead of a blank is used if the data are missing. !
indicates that a null value is forbidden. It is used for alphanumeric
data (A format) since, normally, blank entries are allowed for
   alphanumeric values.

An asterisk, *, indicates that there is a more extensive note about that
field. Notes can also be denoted by numbers in parentheses at the end of
   the explanation (e. g., (2)).

Less frequently used are symbols that denote that the values are
strictly increasing, +, not decreasing, +=, strictly decreasing, -, or
   not increasing, -=.

                     ADC E-NEWS SUBSCRIPTION INFORMATION

The ADC Electronic News is published four times a year. It is a free service
that we hope you will find of value. The ADC can no longer support BITnet
node names. If you have given us a BITnet address, did not receive a recent
message from us, and wish to continue to receive the ADC Electronic Newsletter,
please re-subscribe with an Internet address. We have put a great deal of time
and effort into finding Internet addresses but were not always successful.

If any of your colleagues would like to subscribe, they can send E-mail to
Majordomo@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov and put the command

      SUBSCRIBE ADC-SUBSCRIBERS

in the body of the message -- not in the subject line. You will receive
two messages, the first is a standard Majordomo response and the second
is a "welcome" message. If you do not want to receive any more issues,
send E-mail to Majordomo@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov and in the body of the message
put in the command "unsubscribe adc-subscribers".

Hypertext versions of the back issues are available via WWW.
These can be found through the ADC home page, at URL

      http://adc.astro.umd.edu/

or ASCII text versions are also available via anonymous FTP to
adc.astro.umd.edu in directory pub/adc/adc_enews.
