                               INTRODUCTION

In response to feedback from you, the users of ADC's services, we have
developed a lengthy "to do" list for improvements to the ADC's table data
visualization tools. New ADC staffer Brian Thomas describes the latest
enhancements to these tools in his article in this issue.

As promised last time, this issue will bring you up to date on the recent
staff additions at the ADC. Regrettably, we also note one new departure.

Several ADC staffers will be presenting poster papers at the upcoming
meeting of the AAS in Chicago. This papers will describe the latest on the
R&D work of the ADC. Look for them in Session 44, "Computation and
Data Analysis", and Session 83, "Databases and Data Mining".

                       ADC Data Visualization Suite Enhancements
                         Brian Thomas (Raytheon ITSS)

The ADC Web site includes a suite of data visualization tools, sometimes
referred to as VCI (Viewer - CatsEye - IMPReSS). These tools allow the user
to move from browsing ADC catalogs and journal tables to acquiring data on
specific objects in one continuous sequence. The ADC Viewer can select and
browse most holdings in the ADC, in which the user can cull, sort, and save
their desired tables. CatsEye plots columns from Viewer tables, allowing data
visualization. From CatsEye, selected catalog objects can be passed to
IMPReSS, which plots available observation "footprints" on the sky and links
directly to the archived data.

The VCI suite has undergone a number of improvements since the last
newsletter. with the bulk of the work resulting in improvements to the the
viewer.

Viewer changes include:

- Download of new formats. These include FITS and various
ASCII delimited tables (user may choose pipes, tabs, spaces,
   or commas for delimiting characters).
- Upload of ASCII formatted tables to user workspace. This helps
the user to save work beyond the baseline time that the ADC
maintains user workspace data. It also allows the user to
upload new data which may be readily compared (via over-plotting)
   to ADC holdings.
- Users may use regular expressions to cull.
- Users may use a circular region to cull coordinates. Because this
brings compatibility with the AstroBrowse standard this enables
greater interoperability with other data centers.

Other suite improvements include:

- Direct access to the user workspace from the top page.
- Improved instructions. Both a terse and descriptive set of
  instructions have been made available.
- User may access CatsEye directly from the top page.

Comings and Goings at the ADC
                        James E. Gass (Raytheon ITSS)

Nils Odegard and Tom Sodroski have joined the Astrophysics Data Facility to
support the ADC and the Facility's infrared and submillimeter data activities.
Nils comes to us from the NPOES project. Both he and Tom have previously
worked on the COBE project.

Brian Thomas has joined the ADC from the x-ray astronomy group here at NASA
Goddard. He has worked on various projects, including the Rossi X-ray Timing
Explorer mission.

Brian Holmes is the most recent addition to the ADC staff. Brian is an
experienced software developer, having worked for several companies that
contract with government agencies.

The new staff members will support the ADC in various areas, including
the Center's application of XML (the eXtensible Markup Language) technologies
to its astronomical catalogs and journal data tables.

Nancy Oliversen has recently said "goodby" to her colleagues at NASA Goddard.
Nancy had supported the ADC several years ago, and had recently renewed her
role with the ADC, after a number of years with the ultraviolet and optical
data group of the ADF. Nancy has worked in support of Goddard projects for
many years. She leaves Raytheon ITSS to join our friends on the staff of the
U.S. Naval Observatory.

Newly Acquired and Updated Catalogs/Journal Tables
                    Gail L. Schneider (Raytheon ITSS)

The following catalogs and journal tables are currently available from the
ADC holdings. The ADC gratefully acknowledges the CDS, AAS, and individual
authors who have recently contributed to our holdings.

See http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/acq_new_updated.html#new_list for a hypertext
version of this article containing direct links to each catalog and journal
table listed.

The ADC Electronic News is published four times a year. It is a free service
that we hope you will find of value. If any of your colleagues would like to
subscribe, they may do so by sending E-mail to Majordomo@adc.astro.umd.edu
with the command

      SUBSCRIBE ADC-SUBSCRIBERS

in the body of the message -- not in the subject line. The sender will
receive two messages, the first is a standard Majordomo response and the
second is a "welcome" message. If you do not want to receive any more issues,
send E-mail to Majordomo@adc.astro.umd.edu and in the body of the message put
