                               INTRODUCTION

Savvy ADC users have been using ADC's anonymous FTP data collections since
they were established in mid 1995. If you are still requesting ADC catalogs
through the NDADS system, please read the cautionary note in this issue.

There's always more that can be done to make the ADC's services better.
Recent improvements are described in this issue. But take note - more and
bigger improvements are on the way! Soon after this newsletter reaches you,
we'll be unveiling a completely redesigned ADC web site. The information you
need should be easier to find on the new pages. One of the biggest new
additions to our web-based services is now in the works. We plan on
introducing a new on-line catalog viewing and subsetting capability over the
next few months. You'll be able to check on it at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/whats_new.html when it is introduced.

Cautionary Note Regarding ADC Catalogs on NDADS
                          James E. Gass (Hughes STX)

Since the ADC set up its anonymous FTP accessible archive back in the Summer
of 1995, we phased out our support of the collection of ADC catalogs available
through the NASA Data Archive and Distribution Service (NDADS) and it's
optical disk jukeboxes. USERS SHOULD NOTE THAT WE HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATING THE
NDADS-BASED SET OF ADC CATALOGS SINCE JULY 1995.

To insure that you are accessing the best and latest versions of the data sets
archived at ADC, be sure to get them from our FTP site at
ftp://adc.astro.umd.edu/pub/adc/archives/ , or through our web site at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/ . Information on the most recent updates to
catalogs can be found on our web site at the address
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/acq_new_updated.html Information on prior
updates is contained in back issues of this newsletter, which are accessible
from http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_newsletters.html

On-going Improvements to ADC access via the World Wide Web
                        James E. Gass (Hughes STX)

The ADC is continually striving to provide better information services to its
users. Most of these in some way relate to services using the World Wide Web,
since this is generally the best way to access the ADC's information. The ADC
staff has made several noteworthy changes to the ADC's Web and FTP services
since the last issue of this newsletter.

Prior to February 1997, the hyperlinks from the holdings list, indices, or
hit lists from the archive search service led directly to the anonymous FTP
directory for the given catalog or journal table. This has been changed. Now
these links lead to a listing of the data set's ReadMe document with a
hyperlink to the FTP directory. This is similar to the approach used by our
friends at CDS. The hope is that this will be more helpful in deciding which
catalogs are of interest. Our thanks to Dr. Guenther Eichhorn, Project
Scientist for the NASA Astrophysics Data System for recommending this change.

A check of the ADC catalog access statistics has shown that users frequently
request catalogs that have been superseded by later catalogs. While some
users may genuinely need the earlier works, we are concerned that many may
request the outdated data sets because they are unaware that better ones are
available. To address this issue, we have taken several steps to make it
clearer which catalogs have been superseded. The superseded catalogs have
been moved from the archives FTP directory to new directory at
/pub/adc/superseded/ on adc.astro.umd.edu. In their places, we've put a
special abbreviated ReadMe documents that indicate their status. The archive
search service will pick up these documents and provide users with their
choice of going to the superseded or newer catalogs. Next, the holdings lists
have been modified to indicate which data sets have been superseded, and by
what catalogs. The superseded catalogs have been removed from the author and
keyword indices.

Various institutions are putting very large data sets on line. In many cases,
it makes no sense for the ADC to expend the resources to duplicate these
services. Since ADC users may need these data to support their research, we
have developed a new category called "external" to complement our catalogs and
journal table directories. This will contain subdirectories with specialized
ReadMe files with brief descriptions and pointers to the external on-line
services. We have just begun to set up this service. We will describe it in
greater detail in the next issue.

Finally, as mentioned in the introduction, we have been re-designing our web
site. While we hoped to have the new pages in place in time for this issue,
we still have a bit more to do before they are ready to go. The new
organization of information and services should make it easier to navigate our
site. For newcomers to the site, there'll be a new visitor's page, and a web
site tour. The new design also includes a section especially for amateur
astronomers and another for students and educators. Coming soon to a web
browser near you!

Update on the "Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume 3" CD-ROM
                      Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

As announced on January 7, the CD-ROM "Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume
3" is now available from the ADC. At the time of the announcement, only the
ASCII version was available for distribution, the FITS version has arrived
and can now be ordered (see ordering information below).

During the 189th meeting of the AAS, held January 12-16 in Toronto, the ADC
distributed or took orders for over 100 discs. The ASCII version of Volume 3
was by far the most popular, but we also distributed a number of Volume 1 and
2 discs. The NSSDC Request Coordination Office has received requests for over
335 Volume 3 discs to date, this number includes the 79 Volume 3 discs that
were distributed during the AAS meeting.

If you have not yet ordered your copy of either Volumes 1 or 2 and want to
know more about their contents, you can access this information through the
WWW at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_other_media.html.

We have received our first error report on Volume 3 (please see my
article below for more information about the error).

Below is the Volume 3 CD-ROM contents list. Please note that all of
the catalogs were extensively reviewed prior to CD-ROM processing.
In many cases, the ReadMe files were revisited or standardized and
catalogs were reformatted and or corrected. Many of the catalogs are
not included in my article "Newly Acquired and Updated Catalogs/Journal
Tables" and are also available through the WWW at

http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_archive_access.html.

Bidelman-Parsons Spectroscopic/Bibliographic Catalog
(catalogs/6032/data1.dat and data2.dat)
Submitted by CDS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Nancy,

A few questions and problems related to Bidelman's catalogue 6032:

1. The file data2.dat doesn't conform to its description. In fact,
there are spurious decimal points in the ID field of this table,
I don't understand why Luy explicitly added these points (and at
these positions!) in this field which is an identifier which must
be identical to the same field in data1.dat.
   I just removed cols 7 and 11 in data2.dat

2. A more strange feature: the original star
05429 2613 1 2 05 42.9 26 13. 05 46.0 +26 14: 15.3 P
05429 2613 2 2 C *STEPHENSON
was transformed in data1.dat and data2.dat into
05426+2611 1 2 05 42.6 26 11. 05 46.0 +26 14: 15.3 P
05429 2613 2 2 C *STEPHENSON
(strangely written "054.29 261.3 2 2 C *STEPHENSON" in your data2.dat)
This is apparently the only mismatch between the 2 files that I found.

3. The file "index.dat" doesn't provide useful information, after the split
of the data file into the components. It would be more useful
if it would provide the "ID" value which is used by both data1 and
data2 files. And is it really useful at all with the nowadays computers ?

I corrected these things here.

Bien amicalement,
Francois Ochsenbein

Editor's Note: The catalog files has been corrected in the ADC archives
under pub/adc/archives/catalogs/6/6032.
