                             INTRODUCTION

As always, it was a pleasure to meet those of you who visited the ADC's
exhibit booth at the Winter AAS meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Attendance at
this meeting was unusually light, due to funding constraints, winter storms,
etc. Attendees of the meeting were treated to delightful weather. Many took
advantage of the ADC booth to pick up their copy of the new ADC CD-ROM. To be
expected, a few errors have turned up so far on the new discs. Users of the
RC3 catalog who have the ASCII version of the CD-ROM should check out Gail
Schneider's Errata article in this issue. The version of that catalog on that
disc was damaged during pre-production.

The ADC staff wishes to express its gratitude to the members of the new
ADC Scientific Steering Committee. These individuals have volunteered their
time and energies to enable the ADC to keep its services in tune with the
community's needs. Chairperson Ken Seidelmann describes the first meeting of
the Committee in his article in this issue.

1995 saw the ADC accomplish some important goals. Two of these, comprehensive
anonymous ftp access to the data holdings, and the second CD-ROM volume helped
make our holdings more accessible to you the user. Now it's time for the ADC
to look ahead to determine what service enhancements will make the ADC more
useful to its users. We've included a short questionnaire for those who have
thoughts on the matter to share with us.

                ADC Scientific Steering Committee
                       Ken Seidelmann (USNO)

On February 6, 1996 the first meeting of the ADC Scientific Steering Committee
(SSC) was held at Goddard Space Flight Center. This committee has been
established to provide input to GSFC concerning the ADC services and future
directions for the ADC.

The committee's members are:

Ken Seidelmann US Naval Observatory (Chairman)
Roger Bell U. of Maryland
Douglas Currie U. of Maryland
Ronald Downes Space Telescope Science Inst.
Jeffrey Guerber amateur
Gerard Kriss John Hopkins U.
Gart Westerhout retired.

At the inaugural meeting in February, the SSC reviewed the activities of the
ADC and its access through the World Wide Web. The visibility of the ADC and
methods for improving the community's knowledge of the ADC were discussed.
Future activities for the ADC were discussed. The need for database-type
access to specific data as opposed to access to entire catalogs was
discussed. The committee made specific suggestions to the ADC staff.
The date of the next meeting of the SSC was set for 4 June.

The best way to pass on your ADC questions, suggestions, complaints, etc. is
to contact the ADC directly (see contact information below - ed.). Those
wishing to contact the Scientific Steering Committee can send E-mail to
PKS@SPICA.USNO.NAVY.MIL

                ERRATA FOR THE ADC CD-ROMS, VOLUME 1 & 2
                    Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

SPECIAL NOTE CONCERNING THE RC3 ON Vol. 2, No. 1: The Astronomical Data Center
CD-ROM, Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume 2, has been publicly
available since January 1, 1996. Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, some
errors have been discovered on this volume. One noteworthy error was found on
the ASCII version of Volume 2. The file containing data for the Third
Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (RC3), catalogs/7155/rc3.dat, became
corrupted during the CD pre-mastering process. (See detailed information
below.) Please note that the FITS version of the RC3 on Vol. 2, No. 2 was not
affected.

A few more sets of errata for the Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume 1
have also been received since the last report in the April 1995 issue. A
complete list of errors has been compiled in two text files named
cdrom1_errata.txt and cdrom2_errata.txt. For anonymous ftp and WWW access the
URL is ftp://adc.astro.umd.edu/pub/adc/errors/.

Each of the following error reports is credited to the party that brought the
problem to our attention, and the error reports are in their own words. We ask
that any other users of the ADC CD-ROM who discover errors or inconsistencies
contact us so that we can get the information out to our users. Most errors
have been verified and corrected in our archives, you may pick up a copy
of the corrected data via anonymous ftp on adc.astro.umd.edu under the
pub/adc/archives/catalogs directory.

If you encounter any problems, please contact the ADC by E-mail at
help@adc.astro.umd.edu.

Reported errata for Volume 1:

Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies (NONSTELL/GALAXIES/UGC)
Submitted by James Thomas Himer, U. of Calgary
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gail,

I've discovered a type in A7026b_UGC.DAT while creating finder charts for the
NGC4206/16/22 field.

The MCG designation for UGC07284 (=NGC 4216) is stated as MCG+02-13-072. It
should be MCG+02-31-072.
                 ^^
It was wrong on my ADC CD-ROM, and it is also incorrect in your archive. The
MCG designations for 4206 and 4222 (both straddling and only about 10 minutes
from 4216) have MCG+02-31-072 which made the error for 4216 obvious. NED (IPAC)
also confirms that this is an error in the ADC version.

The MCG designation for NGC 4216 is correct in Nilsson's original paper publi-
cation (page 209), so this appears to be a key entry typo.

The Hubble Space Telescope Guide Star Photometric Catalog (PHOTOM/GSPC)
Submitted by Mati Morel, Australia
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Gail,
Re: Photoelectric sequence S335, by Lasker, Sturch et al (Astrophys. J.
 Suppl.,68: 1-90, 1988 September).
This sequence is reproduced in Vol. 1 of Selected Astronomical Catalogs, in
GSPCCAT, under subdir. GSPC (Photometric Data). The COORDINATES of
ALL stars in this sequence are wrong. I noticed this about two years ago, and
have checked it again by comparing the published finder chart with a computer
generated map of GSC stars. I find the following coordinates for sequence
 stars:

 S335:
 A  =  GSC 7904.02418      (1950)  18h8m12.3s  -40  13'20"
 B  =  GSC 7904.01599                    18  8    10.2    -40   25 31
 C  =  GSC 7904.01564                    18  8    32.6    -40   24  24
 D  = GSC 7904.00386                     18  8    31.3    -40  16 11
 E  =  GSC 7904.01898                     18  8    27.5   -40  15 52
 F Not in GSC
 G Not in GSC
The positions given in the GSPC for F and G are certainly wrong, but I have
not attempted to measure relative positions on the small, crowded finder
 charts.
 Regards,
 Mati Morel

A Catalogue of [Fe/H] Determinations (catalogs/3165/table1.dat)
Submitted by John Greaves, United Kingdom
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The entry for 187642 should read (without keeping format):

187642 ALF AQL A7IV-V 0.77 .22 .08 .14 G S 0.59 1 1.40 SUN +0.30 423

Note: The error was reported by John Greaves and recorded in the list of
reported errors for Volume 1. Unfortunately, the error was never corrected
and the same error now occurs on Volume 2. The correct version
of the table1.dat file is available via anonymous ftp on adc.astro.umd.edu
under pub/adc/archives/catalogs/3/3165.

General Catalogue of Variable Stars, 4th Edition (catalogs/2172/cross_in.dat)
Submitted by Wayne H. Warren, Hughes STX)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Nikolai;

I have found the following error in the cross identification table:
 --------------------------------------------------------------------
SAO057884 IR AUR
 --------------------------------------------------------------------
This entry should be changed to read IQ AUR.
Best wishes....Wayne.

Note: The error was reported by Wayne H. Warren back in May 1995.
Unfortunately, our archive copy of the file was never corrected and the
error also occurs on Volume 2. The correct version of the cross_in.dat
file is now available via anonymous ftp on adc.astro.umd.edu under
pub/adc/archives/catalogs/2/2172.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (catalogs/7155/rc3.dat)
Submitted by Carlo Giovanardi, Arcetri Observatory
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear ADC people:
I tried to use the ASCII version of Sel. Astr. Catalogs vol. 2 and,
browsing in the RC3, that is catalog n. 7155, I found that only the first
5117 records are in good shape. The rest is a mess.
There are several copies of the CD-ROM here (the Arcetri Observatory,
Florence, Italy) and I tried with three of them with the same result.
So we are facing two possibilities:
1)	I'm doing something very stupid (probable)
2)	There is something wrong in the file (possible)

In any case, I would appreciate a comment from you.

Thank you for the kind attention,
Carlo Giovanardi

Note: This problem was generated by the ADC itself. The data file became
corrupted during the process of copying the file from magnetic disk to
the CD-R pre-master disc; records 5118 through 84,767 contain data from
another catalog. The FITS version of the data file on the Selected
Astronomical Catalogs, Volume 2, Number 2 CD-ROM is not corrupted and thus
can be used as an alternative if you have received both versions of the
CD-ROM.

The ADC has prepared several compressed copies of the uncorrupted
rc3.dat file for various platforms which are in our ftp archives. The
compressed files are now available via anonymous ftp on adc.astro.umd.edu
under pub/adc/cd-rom/7155. If you do not have internet access and wish to
receive the replacement compressed file on floppy diskettes, please contact
the NSSDC Request Coordination Office at (301) 286-1635. Please ensure that
your name and fax number is clearly identified on the fax. Please provide the
Request Coordination Office with information about the platform you will be
using to read the floppy diskettes. If you wish , you may mail your request
to the Request Coordination Office, National Space Science Data Center, Code
633, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland, 20771, U.S.A.

Questionnaire on Service Enhancements, future CD-ROMS, etc.
                         James E. Gass (Hughes STX)

In the January 1995 issue we asked questions on how users felt about the ADC's
services. Since that time, we've made some significant enhancements to those
services. In today's world, the needs of the astrophysics community are
rapidly evolving. The ADC must work to keep pace with those changes in order
to continue to deliver the services the community needs. With that in mind,
here are a few more questions for our users on possible service enhancements,
additional data products, and the like. We hope you will take the time to
answer these questions so that we may enhance our services to better meet your
needs.

Please E-mail your responses to adc@adc.astro.umd.edu

=========================Please cut here and return=====================

Q: Would you find a revised version of the first ADC CD-ROM (latest versions
of the same catalogs) to be useful?

Q: In 1994, the ADC produced a printed document called the "Astronomical
Catalog Desk Reference". It contained lists of catalogs available from the
ADC, descriptions of many of these catalogs, and indices organized by subject
keyword and by author. Would you find a CD-ROM-based "Astronomical Catalog
Desk Reference" with on-disc search aids useful? Would you prefer a paper
document? Or are the ADC's networked services and information sufficient for
the purpose of looking up information about our data sets?

Q: The ADC is investigating providing on-line searching of the data records of
our catalogs. Would this capability be useful to you? Would you prefer to
search catalog contents remotely (over the WWW), or would you prefer that the
ADC provide better tools for extracting catalog data on your own machine?

Q: Where on-line abstracts are available for the original source publications
of ADC data sets, would it be useful to include access to that abstract from
the ADC FTP site? If the full paper were available for electronic
distribution, would you like to see access to that from the data set's
directory?

Q: Are you a user of the ADC's CD_ROMs? If so, would you like to see us
produce additional volumes of "Selected Astronomical Catalogs"? What data
sets and/or tools would you like to see on future ADC CD-ROMs?

Q: Have you ever used ADC products or services as educational aids? If so,
please tell us how. Do you have any suggestions for how we can make our
services more useful for that purpose?

Q: Are there any other new services that you would like to have the ADC
provide? Please describe in detail.

two messages, the first is a standard Majordomo response and the second
is a "welcome" message. If you do not want to receive any more issues,
send E-mail to Majordomo@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov and in the body of the message
put in the command "unsubscribe adc-subscribers".
