                             INTRODUCTION

This issue doesn't contain an article on the progress of work on the next ADC
CD-ROM volume, but we'd like to assure you that we're moving ahead on that
effort. Our current projections are that we will go to production on the ASCII
and FITS versions of "Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume 2" sometime in the
Fall of this year.

The ADC first began publishing this electronic newsletter three years ago this
month. We'd like to take a moment to assess its utility from the readers point
of view. This issue contains a short questionnaire on that topic. If you will
kindly take a few moments to respond to those questions, it will help us fine
tune this service.

MINI QUESTIONNAIRE ON ADC ELECTRONIC NEWS

                       Nancy G. Roman (Hughes STX)

As you probably remember from our last Newsletter, we are collecting feedback
on our services. Our goal is to keep our services in tune with your needs.
The response thus far has been light, so we are changing our approach.
Instead of a single questionnaire to cover all of our activities, we decided to
request your reaction to one part at a time. This time, we shall appreciate
knowing whether you find the ADC Newsletter useful and, if so, which portions
are important.

                          CONVERTING TO FITS FILES

                        Nancy G. Roman (Hughes STX)

Most datasets are archived by the ADC in ASCII, since these files are in the
most versatile form. However, for some uses, such as IRAF, it is easier or
necessary to have the files in FITS. For catalogs and journal files which
include a ReadMe or Intro file written in the new standard documentation style,
the CDS has written a program called "tofits" to convert ASCII files to FITS
for UNIX machines.

To obtain this program:
        ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr
        login as anonymous
        cd /pub/cats
        copy all of the files
in your home directory, type: zcat csdclient.tar.Z | tar xvf -
Then,
"make" compiles the required source in the current directory
"make install" moves the various pieces to the standard directories
/usr/local/bin for the executables and /usr/man/manl for the manual
         pages.

Note: At present most of our files do not have the new standard documentation,
although we are slowly converting the older documents for the frequently
requested catalogs. Those that are in the new form can be recognized by the
fact that the format table contains the following columns:

Bytes Format Units Label Explanation

The label column is necessary for producing FITS files. If necessary, the format
table from an older document can be reformatted into this form and used without
including the remainder of the document.

ERRATA FOR THE ADC CD-ROM, VOLUME I

                        Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

In the previous issues of the ADC E-News, we have presented errata lists for
the ADC CD-ROM, Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume I. Only one additional
error has been found since the last issue.

A complete list of errors has been compiled in a text file for retrieval over
the network by anonymous FTP from nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov, file
"pub/ADC/adc_cdrom/adc_cdrom.errata".

IRAS Catalog of Point Sources, Version 2.0 (PHOTOM/IRASPSC)
Submitted by Shiro Nishimura, National Astron. Obs. Japan
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as I searched through the IPAC Newsletter, there were two articles
titled "Information Exchange", which contained erratum information on the
IRAS PSC.
1) Vol.3,No.1,p.3; by S.G.Kleinmann : K and I magnitudes in TMSS
2) 3, 2, 5; S.Nishimura : HD number
                     (K.Sadakane) : Missing BS stars
Users are advised to take notice that corrections for these errors were not
yet incorporated in the association file on the CD-ROM. Besides there are
many diversities from the standard format of source identifications, espe-
cially of Verons' QSO/AGN Catalog and OSU Radio Sources. There are also
many "DITTO"s in OSU source identifications, which may be troublesome in
case of direct access (even in on case(IRAS 06053-0622), DITTO precedes to
the actual identification(PKS 0605-06)).

Some errors were recently found in the psc.doc file:
In Table X.B.1, the last three entries should read:
139 MHCON Possible number of HCON --- I2
 141 FCOR Flux correction factor (times 1000) --- 4I4
                         (1 value per band)
 157 SPARE 3 Spare blanks --- 3A1

Table X.B.4 was truncated at the end of the table, and should be added with
following data.

                    Field2 First SSC flux(m Jy)
                    Field3 Second SSC flux
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
** Source name and type fields were combined to hold spectral type and class.
+ Catalog numbers 33-38 reserved for internal use.

Table XII.A.3 should be corrected as follows, though this table is no longer
significant now that Table X.B.1 was already revised.
1) The format for MHCON should read I2 for 12.
2) The start byte for SPARE should read 157 for 149.

                             OTHER REPORTED ERRATA

                        Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

In previous issues of the ADC E-News, we have presented errata lists for the
ADC CD-ROM, Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume I. We also receive errata
reports on other catalogs. The correction will be applied to the catalog when
time permits.

Nancy;
I found a magnitude of 6.5 on the following star and just corrected it,
so you should check your data set.

Incredible to find that after all this time.

                            NEWLY ACQUIRED CATALOGS

                        Gail L. Schneider (Hughes STX)

The following catalogs are currently available for request from the ADC
interactively through NODIS, WWW and NDADS/ARMS. See Volume 1, Issue 1,
of the ADC Electronic News for details on how to access NODIS and NDADS/ARMS.
The ADC online services via the WWW can be accessed at URL

http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/adc/adc_online_access.html.

In the following, each entry gives the NDADS EID (ADC number) of the catalog,
status, title and reference, comments (if any), and a description of the files
associated with the catalog. FLAT, FITS, and DOCUMENT file types are listed
separately. Status codes are defined as:

A - Has been checked for consistency by the ADC
B - Is distributed as received
C - May have errors, inconsistent format, or is incomplete

The ADC Electronic News is published four times a year. It is a free service
that we hope you will find of value. The ADC can no longer support BITnet
node names. If you have given us a BITnet address, did not receive a recent
message from us, and wish to continue to receive the ADC Electronic Newsletter,
please re-subscribe with an Internet address. We have put a great deal of time
and effort into finding Internet addresses but were not always successful.

If any of your colleagues would like to subscribe, they can send E-mail to
Majordomo@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov and put the command

      SUBSCRIBE ADC-SUBSCRIBERS

in the body of the message -- not in the subject line. You will receive
two messages, the first is a standard Majordomo response and the second
is a "welcome" message. If you do not want to receive any more issues,
send E-mail to Majordomo@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov and in the body of the message
put in the command "unsubscribe adc-subscribers".
